CPD hosts training to reduce crime at rental properties
Rental property managers will have a chance to address crime issues they see at rental properties in a training hosted by the Columbia Police Department.
The training Tuesday is the first of three the department will host.
The program was developed in 1992 and takes a multifaceted approach to crime prevention, which includes a coalition of police, property managers and residents of rental properties.
According to Columbia police, some of the benefits to reducing crime in a multi-housing complex include a stable, more satisfied tenant base, increase demand for rental units, lower maintenance/repair costs, increased property values, and improved safety for tenants, landlords and managers.
Some of the negative effects of crime and drug activity include; decline in property values, property damage, civil penalties, loss of rent, loss of valued tenants, and anger between neighbors and property managers.
Tuesday’s training session will discuss how to be code compliant, protecting your rights as a landlord, benefits of applicant screening, strengthening rental agreements, maintaining a fire safe environment, how to become a proactive property manager and to develop life safety awareness.
The training is free. It will be at 5001 E. Meyer Industrial Drive from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
