First responders offer Memorial Day safety tips

Memorial Day is a popular time to grill, and the Columbia Fire Department responds to an increased amount of cooking or barbecue-related fires during this holiday weekend.

Assistant Chief Brad Frazier said unattended grills and improperly disposed charcoal are common causes for calls during Memorial Day.

Frazier recommends putting charcoal in a metal container with a tight-fitting lid after barbecue.

“It’s always a good idea to keep your grill clean of any excessive grease,” Frazier said. “Keep BBQ grills a good distance away from any structures or overhangs.”

The fire department also responds to many water-related emergencies over Memorial Day weekend.

Swimming by oneself is dangerous. Frazier encourages everybody to grab a friend before jumping in the water.

Children should never be left alone near water, even if they have a flotation device on.
