Hallsville residents express concerns over Highway 124 safety
Residents in Hallsville are expressing safety concerns after a deadly crash Friday on Highway 124.
MoDOT is currently working on improvements along the stretch of Highway 124 from Hallsville to Centralia. They have already resurfaced and improved the shoulders on the highway and now they are doing additional paving.
Over the last five years, there have been at least five deadly crashes along that stretch of roadway. In 2016, four people were killed.
Hallsville residents ABC 17 News spoke with were skeptical that the road will get better. Several people said cell phones are big problem in addition to driver speed and inattention.
In 2016, MoDOT did a speed study on the road and found the speed to be appropriate.
The work on 124 is part of a series of improvements between Columbia and Centralia.
