Cold start to spring delays severe weather season
One of the coldest starts to April has led to a delay in our severe weather season in Mid-Missouri. While blooms are hard to come by as we continue to head into April, the threat for snow and cold continues to linger into spring.
This cold air in place has also led to a delayed start in our severe weather season not only here in Mid-Missouri, but across a good portion of the nation. Since the start of the year, only 145 tornadoes have been reported in the US, nearly 100 tornadoes less than the nation typically sees.
Thanks to a parade of cold fronts, the ingredients we need for severe weather has remained locked in place across the Deep South leading to more active weather in the southeast, and tranquil and cold weather in the Midwest.
While this has been the case lately, there is signs that as we head into the next 2 weeks, we’ll finally see a resurgence of spring. This will likely lead to an uptick in severe weather across Mid-Missouri. While severe weather has been delayed, it doesn’t mean we won’t see any severe storms this year. You still want to make sure that you stay prepared and practice your severe weather drills, as we continue to head into the heart of severe weather season.
