Weekend rain and snow chances
We’ll go from spring to winter in just 24 hours this weekend as a strong cold front moves through. Showers are possible Saturday morning as gusty southwesterly winds usher in mild air. A tenth of an inch or less is expected and the showers will be hit and miss so some areas could end up dry. We’ll reach the mid 50s to near 60 degrees Saturday before a cold front moves through in the afternoon. However, winds will shift to the northwest and bring temperatures down to the upper 20s by early Sunday morning.
A narrow band of light snow is expected to move in north of I-70 Sunday morning, spreading from west to east. Temperatures will be below freezing as it moves in so some minor accumulation is possible by 10 AM. By early afternoon, another band of moisture moves in from the west, along and south of I-70, tracking to the east-southeast. Snow will be the main precipitation type with this from HWY 50 north with some rain mixing in with the snow farther south. Sleet and a cold rain are possible closer to I-44 from mid-afternoon through early evening.
Temperatures will only reach the mid to upper 30s Sunday afternoon and snow is expected to accumulate on grassy and elevated surfaces. Light snow will melt as it hits roads but pockets of moderate snow will cause slush on roads. Areas close to and just south of I-70 could see some moderate snow at times which could lead to slow travel for a period of time from mid to late afternoon.
As far as amounts. most areas north of HWY 50 will see up to an inch of snow with possibly some pockets of two inches. Areas farther south will likely only see a dusting at best on grassy surfaces.
