Dozens expected to gather in downtown Columbia for local ‘March for Our Lives’ rally
Dozens of people are expected to march through downtown Columbia Saturday afternoon for a local ‘March for Our Lives’ rally.
The Columbia Police Department tweeted Friday that there will be a temporary road closure of 8th Street from Elm to Walnut streets between 1:15 p.m. and 2 p.m. for the demonstration. In the tweet, police asked drivers to find alternate routes during that time.
According to the website sign-up for the event, the march, nationally and locally, was created and led by students. It said the movement will have the power to “finally change the gun laws that have allowed far too many atrocities to occur.”
According to one of the several Facebook events created for the rally, people will meet at the columns at the University of Missouri at 1 p.m. The march will start shortly after 1 p.m. The route takes the marchers along 8th Street and ends at the Boone County Courthouse.
The march comes a little more than one month after the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Florida that left 17 students and staff dead.
