CPS prepares for student walkout to protest gun violence
Columbia Public Schools sent out a letter to the district about talk of a school walkout to protest gun violence.
The community relations director said in the letter that some secondary students want to participate in the March 14 National Walkout Day.
According to the letter, district and building leaders are developing a plan for the walkout to balance the freedom of speech with student safety.
The letter also says district staff have been reminded they cannot participate in the walkout as it is planned during school hours and they are public government employees.
There are two other protests being planned at a nationally. A March for Our Lives event is scheduled for March 24. Another walkout is set for April 20, marking the anniversary of the Columbine High School shooting.
