Columbia surpasses renewable energy target

Columbia city officials announced on Monday that the 2018 Renewable Energy Reports showed that the city exceeded the target for creating renewable energy and increased by 9% from last year.

Voters passed an ordinance in 2004 mandating that Columbia Water and Light provide electricity from increasing amounts of renewable energy.

In 2017, Columbia’s renewable electric supply came from wind, landfill gas and solar. The total amount supplied was 15.7%, which exceeds the requirement of 5% by 10.7%.

The 2018 Renewable Energy Report will be reviewed by the Water and Light board as well as the Environment and Energy Commission, then sent to the City Council for approval.
