Bitterly cold start as kids head back to school; wind chill advisory until noon
It’s going to be a bitterly cold start Thursday as kids start to head back to school from the winter vacation.
While it may seem obvious to some parents, bundle the kiddos up this morning as they are heading back to school. If you can drive your kid to school this morning, it’s highly advised rather than have them wait at the bus stop during these cold temperatures.
According to the Missouri Department of Health the temperatures mid-Missouri are experiencing are considered dangerous and outdoor play is not advised. Playing in temperatures or wind chills below -15 should be avoided because exposed skin begins to freeze within minutes.
The department urges child care providers to monitor the health and safety of children. Avoid drinking high-sugar drinks, stick to water or fruit juices. Choose boots that are large enough to comfortably accommodate two pairs of socks.
Columbia Public Schools has decided to start on-time Thursday, despite the cold temperatures. According to the school board policy, “Parents may make the final decision regarding a child’s attendance. If the parent views the weather as too severe or road conditions too dangerous, absences will be excused.”
