20-year-old charged with DWI after single-car crash in Camden County

A 20-year-old woman has been charged with a DWI resulting in a physical injury after troopers responded to a single-vehicle crash on Cable Ridge Road.

According to the probable cause statement, troopers attempted to speak with Cassandra Gilbert and Travis Johns, who were involved in the crash, but they had both been intubated and were unconscious.

Troopers said they asked first-responders if the driver appeared to be intoxication and they said yes.

After an investigation, troopers were able to determine that a pickup was traveling northbound when Gilbert drove the truck off the right side of the roadway, striking a barbed wire fence and a tree.

Officers said they went to the hospital where they waited for Gilbert to become conscious. Gilbert told officers that Johns was driving home drunk and kept passing out at the wheel. Gilbert said she decided to get behind the wheel to drive the rest of the way.

According to the probable cause statement, Gilbert kept commenting that she should not have driven, but did not have a choice.

Gilbert admitted to troopers that she was driving drunk.
