Missouri Task Force One to remain in Houston Thursday
The FEMA team from Missouri will continue its work in the city of Houston Thursday working with the city’s fire department.
The focus will be training about 50 fire department workers on how to use the association’s GPS technology to wide area searches, as well as the Urban Search and Rescue Response System procedures.
“Using GPS’s for wide area search in the FEMA Urban Search and Rescue Response System originates from lessons learned from MO-TF1’s response to Hurricane Katrina,” said Assistant Chief Gale Blomenkamp. “The undisputed value of having and using GPS tracking and common symbology was proven during Hurricane Ike and the rest is history.”

The team has eight more days left in their primary deployment to the affected area, but that time could be extended if FEMA deems it necessary.
