Manhunt for suspect continues in Clinton, MO after officer shot, killed

UPDATE 5:14pm: ABC 17 News is digging into an accused police killer’s criminal history and has found suspect Ian McCarthy has a violent past.

ABC 17 News got court documents showing a jury in New Hampshire found McCarthy guilty for 1st degree assault back in 2002. He was convicted for stabbing a minor.

In 2013, McCarthy pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct and in 2015 he was charged for unlawful possession of a gun.

Our ABC 17 News crews saw officers getting in tactical gear around 4:00p.m. Monday as the search for McCarthy entered its 17th hour.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol officially named McCarthy as a suspect in the shooting death of Officer Gary Michael Monday morning. McCarthy was charged with murder and armed criminal action Monday afternoon.

ORIGINAL: A police officer has been shot and killed following a traffic stop in Clinton.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol confirmed Officer Gary Michael with the Clinton Police Department was killed during a traffic stop Sunday night near the Henry County Sheriff’s Dept.

Ian McCarthy has been identified as a person of interest in that shooting. The patrol said a suspect was able to flee the scene on foot, and as of right now his location is unknown.
