Two suspects assault Columbia man with baseball bats, one still at large

Columbia police officers were called to 1412 Range Line Street to talk with a victim of a robbery that took place near a yellow house at the corner of North Street and 8th Street on Friday night.

The male victim reported he was at his campsite when two men he knew came up to him and began punching him in the head, knocking him to the ground. The victim reported both men then began assaulting him with aluminum baseball bats and stole $125 from him.

The victim identified both of the suspects. Officers were able to find one of the suspects, Hankel Wayne Jones, at 1204 North 8th Street.

According to court documents, medics said the victim had a broken right arm and swelling and bruising on his face. Documents say the victim was unconscious for one hour.

Jones was arrested for armed criminal action and first degree robbery. While being arrested, Jones asked officers to lock up his house. While the officer was locking up his house, the officer saw an aluminum baseball bat in plain view in the front living room area. Jones also had blood stains on his shirt and shoes.

The second suspect is still at large.
