Columbia police find shell casings on Amelia Street

Columbia police are searching for the person who fired shots on a city street Monday night.

Police said they found three shell casings on Amelia Street near Old Highway 63.

No one was hit and no bullet holes were found in the surrounding buildings.

Police believe the person behind the gun fired up into the air.

ABC 17 spoke with neighbors on Amelia Street that heard everything as it happened.

“I was waiting for Sharon Ray’s weather forecast when I heard maybe four or five rapid fire… consecutive shots,” said Resident John Shepard.

Witnesses said they saw someone shooting from a white vehicle.

For some residents on Amelia Street, this was the first time they saw police on their street, but for others, this was nothing new.

“Back on Amelia Street again. You’d expect it every day,” said Shepard.

ABC 17 News checked dispatch records and found that before Monday, police had been called to the street 73 times, so far this year. However, this is the first shots fired or shots heard call in 2017.
