Storms brought heavy rainfall causing flooding in mid-Mo
Last night’s round of storms brought heavy rainfall to a majority of mid-Missouri. Radar indicated rainfall totals were in excess of 9″ in Chariton county and 5″ in Macon county, within a 12 hour time period. As the storms moved to the south we saw less rainfall, but Columbia still saw over 3″.
These high precipitation amounts are causing river levels to rise. The Missouri River is currently under a flood warning for the Missouri River at Glasgow and the Missouri River at Boonville until late Tuesday night.
The Missouri River at Glasgow saw the water level rise to 23.7′ as of Friday morning at 9:30 AM. The flood stage is 25′, but the current water level is expected to rise. Moderate flooding can be expected as it is forecasted that the water will rise above flood stage by late Friday afternoon, reaching 29′ by early Saturday. The river at Glasgow is expected to fall back below flood stage by Monday afternoon.
The Missouri River at Boonville rose to 19.3′ as of 9:30 AM Friday morning. Minor flooding can be expected as water levels will rise above the flood stage of 21′. Water levels are forecasted to be above the flood stage by Friday evening and continue to rise to near 25′ by late Saturday. These levels will recede below the flood stage by Tuesday morning.
As more rain is in the forecast for the holiday weekend, it is important that you are aware of rising river levels if you’re planning on being by the water for the fourth of July. Never drive through flowing water. As little as 6″ of water can cause you to lose control of your vehicle. Two feet of water can cause the vehicle to lose control and be swept away.
