Holiday outlook

As we head into the weekend, the weather will briefly quiet down but will become active again by Sunday night. Rain is likely Friday morning but will taper off through the day as a cold front pushes south through Mid-Missouri. A few storms could develop by early Friday evening south of HWY 50 but will move out of the area by midnight. This will leave us with dry and less humid weather Saturday into Sunday. However, some rivers, mainly north of I-70, will be near or above flood stage this weekend from recent heavy rain. You’ll want to check river levels before camping near rivers or doing water activities this weekend.

As another area of low pressure approaches from the west, the front will lift back to the north as a warm front Sunday evening. This could trigger a few storms to develop in the Ozarks but would be spotty late-afternoon through evening Sunday.

Sunday night, a complex of storms is expected to develop in northeastern Kansas as the low-level jet (narrow band of stronger winds 1-3000 feet above the surface) interacts with the warm front. These storms will track to the southeast into Mid-Missouri Monday morning through early afternoon. Heavy rain is possible with these along with gusty winds.

Periods of storms are expected from Monday night through Wednesday with possible heavy rain. Some strong or severe storms will also be possible. If you have outdoor plans, you’ll want to stay weather aware and have a way to get the newest forecast, watches and warnings. Have a plan in case storms are heading your way and watch for rising rivers and streams.
