Columbia man charged with child abuse, accused of shaking baby

A Columbia man has been charged with child abuse after an incident in February.

The Boone County Sheriff’s Department said Kyle Matthews sold marijuana while caring for a 6-month-old.

After selling the marijuana, Matthews called his girlfriend, who was with the baby’s mother, and said something was wrong with the baby.

According to court documents, Matthews said the baby fell off a couch and was unresponsive.

The baby was later taken to a hospital, where doctors said the injuries were consistent with a “shaken baby” and that they appeared to be non-accidental.

Matthews is currently in the Boone County Jail.

Matthews had an arraignment Monday and is scheduled for a felony case review at 1:30 p.m. on Friday.
