UPDATE: According to the Fulton Fire Department, they responded to a structure fire at 327 West 7th Street, a 3 story brick building used as business offices on the campus of Westminster College.
The fire department saw heavy smoke and flames coming from the attic area.
Due to the extent of the fire and roof collapse, the fire department said crews were forced to fight the fire from the exterior using large amounts of water to bring the fire under control.
The fire was brought under control in about 90 minutes. Crews stayed on scene for several hours.
The fire department said there was one occupant working in the building who was able to escape uninjured and called 911.
The Missouri State Fire Marshal’s Office along with Fulton Fire Department investigators determined the fire started in the attic, but was not able to determine the cause due to the structure being unsafe to enter.
The occupant said he had been experiencing electrical problems.
Central Callaway Fire Protection District responded auto-aid and South Callaway Fire Protection District was requested for mutual-aid. Callaway County Ambulance district was on scene for stand-by. Fulton Police Department was on scene for traffic and crowd control.
Damage estimates are not available at this time, but the structure did receive major fire damage.
A representative with Westminster told ABC 17 News the fire claim has been turned into the insurance company. Officials don’t know if the company will come Thursday or later.
Also fire inspection officials have not determined a cause for the fire yet.
