Prevent summertime property crime
Property crime is down in Columbia, but the combination of warmer weather and people going on summer vacation make it a perfect time for thieves to strike.
Already this year, more than $1 million in property have been reported stolen in Columbia alone.
According to data collected by the Columbia Police Department, the day you’re most likely to be a victim of a property crime in the city is Wednesday around 6 p.m.
While property crime has been decreasing in the city, about a third of it happens between June and September. That includes burglaries, thefts and stolen cars.
During the overnight hours on Monday, police in nearby Mexico, Mo. said more than a dozen cars were broken into.
Money, electronics and guns were stolen from unlocked cars. Police said that’s where it all starts – locking your doors to your car and house.
Police said a neighborhood watch may also help keep a neighborhood on the alert to suspicious activity.
When you’re away from home on vacation, don’t let people know you’re away. Keep some lights on and have a trusted neighbor grab your mail for you.
