Upper air pattern keeps storms in forecast this week

We’re nearing the end of Spring, with only three weeks left and a stormy pattern is still in place across the Midwest. Usually as we close on May and start June, high pressure builds into the southeast and we’ll see southerly flow and a warm and humid pattern, that has yet to arrive.

The big reason for this is because the upper air pattern is favoring more of a northwesterly flow. With the lack of a high building in from the southeast, daily storm chances will be in the forecast for Mid-Missouri. Enjoy it while it last because usually summer brings about hot, humid, and dry days. That may not be the case this year though, as we previously mentioned, because a developing El Ni ñ o could likely lead to a wet summer.

To date, Mid-Missouri has seen nearly 20 inches of rain since the start of the year, with the majority of that falling since March. It’s a welcoming trend following the drought that ravaged the area earlier in the year. With more in the way of a northwesterly flow for the foreseeable future, daily storms will be common until a summer pattern finally sets up shop across the US.

Stay with ABC 17 Stormtrack Weather as we continue to follow the unfolding pattern that will bring daily rainfall. Keep that umbrella handy.
