A person is recovering after a fire at an apartment complex in Jefferson City on Monday afternoon.

The Jefferson City Fire Department said it responded to the 12-until building in the 500 block of Senate Court around 3:45 p.m.

According to firefighters, when they arrived at the scene, the fire was visible from a ground-level apartment.

Other occupants of the complex were forced to climb down the building’s back balcony to escape the smoke and flames.

Some people were treated at the scene for scrapes and bruises.

Investigators haven’t released the cause of the fire.

The Fire Department reminds people to never leave candles unattended, make sure you have working smoke detectors and always have an escape plan.
