Parks and Recreation urging trailgoers to be more alert
As the weather continues to get warmer, more people will flock to outdoor spaces such as trails and parks.
Mike Griggs, the director of Columbia Parks and Recreation, told ABC 17 News one of the biggest concerns the city sees on the trail is people not being aware of their surroundings.
“Probably the biggest safety concern is when you are on the trail or if you’re just riding a bike through the park or on the streets is not keeping two ears open,” Griggs said.
Griggs told ABC 17 News this can be concerning because people aren’t aware if someone is behind them trying to get by or if someone needs help.
In August, a 26 year-old woman was attacked while on the MKT trail, and as of now, no one has been arrested for that attack.
ABC 17 News went to speak with some trailgoers this afternoon. Sheila Marushak, a frequent trail user, said she feels safe while on the trail.
“I feel very safe on the trail. If I came out early in the morning, it might not be a smart decision but I usually bring my husband or girlfriend with me to be safe,” Marushak said.
