Emergency crews clean up chemical spill in downtown Columbia

The Columbia Fire Department spent nearly two and a half hours cleaning up a small chemical spill downtown Thursday night.

ABC 17 News was told a passerby noticed the product spilling down the road in the 400 block of 9th Street and called emergency services.

Crews were dispatched to the Domino’s around 8:50 p.m. for the spill and determined the chemical to be the cleaning product, “Oven Jell.”

They said Domino’s workers were using the product to clean ovens and oven accessories outside the business.

Despite crews calling it a minuscule event, part of 9th Street and University Avenue were blocked off in an “L” shape while at least 12 firefighters worked to contain the chemical.
