Makeshift weapons found in homicide suspect’s jail cell

The Randolph County prosecutor’s office filed more charges Friday against a 2016 Moberly homicide suspect after jail officers said they found homemade weapons in his jail cell.

Joseph Kertz, 28, is being held at the Randolph County jail on first-degree murder and several other felony charges in connection with the Oct. 6 shooting death of Kevin McCuiston.

According to a probable cause statement, jail officers found a metal screw and a flat piece of sharpened metal in Kertz’s cell on Feb. 24. They also found a zip-lock bag with fermented fruit and raisins to make alcohol.

Kertz was charged with two counts of felony possession of a weapon inside a jail.
