Crash report: Children hurt in road rage crash on I-70 not wearing seatbelts
UPDATE 10:27 A.M.: ABC 17 has confirmed with the Columbia Police Department that at 4:14 p.m., officers were dispatched to a custodial abduction in the 1700 block of Spiros Drive, which did have to do with the crash.
UPDATE: A traffic crash report from the Missouri State Highway Patrol shows no one who was hurt in an alleged road rage crash on I-70 Tuesday was wearing a seatbelt.
The report says the crash happened when 31-year-old Demetres Washington tried to pass another vehicle, driven by Dianna Mays, on the right hand side.
The vehicles collided and Washington lost control, overcorrected, ran off the right side of the roadway, struck a guardrail, and overturned.
There were five people total in the vehicle Washington was driving, including three children ages 9 to 13. According to the report, none of them were wearing seatbelts at the time of the wreck.
A 13-year-old was flown to University Hospital with serious injuries. A 10 and 9-year-old also suffered moderate injuries and the other two women suffered serious injuries.
ABC 17 News called the hospital Tuesday morning to get an update on their conditions are we’re still waiting to hear back.
Original: The two- vehicle crash is being investigated as a road rage-type incident, and it has been confirmed by authorities that three children and two adults were injured as a result of the crash.
All of the victims injured from the crash came from one vehicle. One person was ejected from that vehicle.
Exit 117 at one point was closed but has been reopened.
The initial investigation shows no one in the car carrying the individuals was wearing a seat belt.
Troopers tells ABC 17 News that the road rage incident started several miles before the crash at Exit 117.
Trooper Shawn Brazas says investigators are speaking with witnesses who saw everything unfold. Brazas says they will be speaking with the injured people when they recover.
“Right now the investigation is a priority, of course, but making sure that they’re ok and that they’re healthy and getting the care that they need is our priority right now,” Brazas said.
It’s unclear right now if anyone will be getting a citation.
