Housing project proposed for Jefferson City shoe factory building

New developers have their eye on the International Shoe Company factory building in the 1100 block of East Capitol Avenue.

The Vecino Group, a Springfield-based company outlined its proposal Friday for transforming the 100-plus-year-old building into an 80-unit apartment complex.

The company said that the project is estimated to cost more than $13 million to complete and is contingent upon receiving low-income housing tax credits from the federal government and the Missouri Housing and Development Commission.

“While we did submit a proposal for this housing development to MHDC in January, it’s a competitive process,” said Vecino Group developer Stacy Jurado-Miller. “We don’t know if we’ll be selected to receive the tax credit funding.”

The tax credits would come with certain requirements that dictate who can live in the apartments based on income.

More information about these requirements can be found on the MHDC website and that of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
