Fulton man charged with child abuse

Callaway County sheriff deputies arrested Michael Scofield, 40, of Fulton, on Friday on suspicion of child abuse after an investigation conducted by the department along with Missouri’s Children’s Division.

The sheriff’s department said the investigation involved the abuse of a child at a residence near Fulton. Authorities said the child was taken to a hospital in Columbia, where he/she was treated for injuries and later released.

According to the sheriff’s department, Scofield was also threatening other children inside the home not to tell authorities about the abuse.

The Callaway County Prosecuting Attorney charged Scofield on Saturday with felony abuse of a child and felony tampering with a victim/witness.

He is being held in the Callaway County jail on a $50,000 bond.

The sheriff’s department said deputies and the Children’s Division are still investigating and more charges could be possible.
