Proposed law requires gun owners to report stolen, lost weapons

A new bill filed by Rep. Bruce Franks Jr., D-St. Louis, would require gun owners in Missouri to report the loss or theft of their firearms within 72 hours of the crime.

The proposed law known as HB 185 would implement punishments for violators that vary based on number of offenses.

The bill says, “Failure to report a lost or stolen firearm is an infraction punishable by a fine not to exceed $100 for the first violation, $1000 for the second violation, and a misdemeanor punishable by imprisonment not to exceed six months or a fine not to exceed $1000, or both, for the third violation.”

HB 185 is awaiting committee assignment.
