Experts warn of phone scams as tax season approaches
As tax season approaches, the Boone County Sheriff’s Department said phone scams have been increasing over the last few years.
Detective Tom O’Sullivan said legitimate government agencies do not call and ask for personal information.
According to the IRS, taxpayers will receive a call from the government agency only after a letter has been mailed.
The IRS will not contact taxpayers by email, text messages or social media channels to ask for personal or financial information, according to the IRS website.
O’Sullivan said that if you don’t recognize the person calling, assume that they are trying to rip you off and hang up.
