Security experts warn thieves typically take the path of least resistance

With the holiday season winding down, most people are traveling home after the busiest traveling time of the year.

ABC17 talked with Signal 88, a security company, who has studied previous burglaries.

The captain of the company, Alex Dixon, has studied burglaries and says he typically sees a pattern.

Dixon says, “Most burglaries are a crime of opportunity and most criminals want to take the path of least resistance.”

Regardless if someone is traveling or staying home, taking extra precautions can prevent a burglary.

Dixon advises to check all the locks on windows and doors to make sure they are working.

Have valuables out of sight and try not to post about them on social media.

Columbia police have not released their holiday burglary numbers yet, however public dispatch records show since December 22 there have been 13 burglaries.
