New laws take effect in Missouri

As of New Year’s day, most adults in Missouri can now carry concealed weapons without a permit. That’s according to one of many new Missouri laws taking effect January 1.

Another noteworthy law expands the Castle Doctrine. Under the new regulations, all invited house guests–such as babysitters or grandparents–can now use deadly force against intruders. The law also creates a stand your ground right, meaning people no longer have a duty to retreat from danger before shooting in any place where he or she legally has the right to be present.

Another new law is related to prison sentences for nonviolent drug crimes. Now, first-time offenders convicted of possessing small amounts of marijuana will no longer face jail time.

New legislation also requires the state to hire a company to check welfare recipients’ eligibility.
