Road conditions: What’s happening now

UPDATE 6:22 p.m.: The Columbia Public Works Street Division sent out a release saying that all first and second priority streets have been plowed curb to curb and treated.
All subward streets have also been treated with salt. Some streets in areas that were treated on Saturday have been covered over by a half inch to one inch of snow. This means that areas where there is little direct sunlight because of trees or little traffic to dissolve the snow could remain covered overnight.
Public Works crews will address those locations during normal business hours.
UPDATE 4:00 p.m.: Jefferson City Public Works sent crews home around noon, but will be monitoring roads throughout the night. Crews will also go out before morning rush hour.
Cole County roads are in good condition, and they will also be monitored throughout the night. Crews will be brought in if needed. Remember to drive cautiously, due to ice and snow possibly making the roads slick.
UPDATE 7:38 a.m.: According to Jefferson City Public Works, there have been full crews out treating the roads since 6:00 a.m. There is a good melt happening right now. The primary roads are partially covered, and the secondary roads are fully covered.
In Cole County, the conditions are very similar to Jefferson City. Cole County Public Works did emphasize that salt is less effective in cold temperatures, but the roads are driveable at this time. Cole County EMS said that crews have not had calls this morning.
UPDATE 7:01 a.m.: Public Works has sent out a release saying that due to off and on snow showers and bitterly cold temperatures and wind chills, crews began to refocus on first and second priorities around 10 p.m. last night.
Because temperatures are still forecast to be extremely cold on Sunday, an eight person crew is reporting at 7:00 a.m.
Again, we would like to remind viewers to stay home if possible.
ORIGINAL STORY: Publics Works crews are still monitoring the conditions of the roads Sunday morning.
The snowfall from Saturday night was mostly dry, and the roads have been continually treated. However, because of the extremely low temperatures, there could still be some icy areas.
There have been many church service cancellations, so make sure to check our closings page for any updates.
Visibility is limited because of the snow, making it hard to see traffic signs and the dividers on the roads. Make sure to drive slowly and cautiously if you choose to go out on the roads.
