Person of interest identified after semi hits young girl who ran into traffic in Macon

UPDATE 11:07 a.m.: The driver and the driver’s tractor trailer have been identified. However, the driver’s name has not been released at this time.

Original Story: Macon Police have confirmed a young girl is hospitalized after a tractor trailer hit her Monday evening.

The collision happened at 5:19 Monday evening. The Macon Police Department says officers were dispatched to investigate a pedestrian crash on US 63, commonly known as Missouri Street, near the Elm Street junction.

Police report the young girl tried to run across the road against the crosswalk sign into oncoming traffic.

They say the traffic on US 63 had a green light at the time.

Police believe a southbound tractor trailer unintentionally hit the girl and kept driving.

They say the girl was flown to the hospital from Macon and is in serious condition.

Police say there were several witnesses and surveillance video from nearby stores that helped identify the vehicle and a person of interest.

It’s unclear if police have been able to locate the driver yet and police are not releasing the driver’s name.

Police say the investigation is ongoing. They say the Macon County Sheriff’s Office and the Missouri State Highway Patrol are assisting in the investigation.
