Seven hurt after shootout in Kansas City spanning several blocks

Seven people sustained gun shot wounds after a shootout involving police early Sunday morning in Kansas City.

Chief Forte with the Kansas City Police confirmed the news via Twitter.

Police were called to the area of Gregory Boulevard and Prospect Avenue just after 2 a.m. for reports of gunshots. Upon arrival, officers found people actively shooting at one another.

Fearing for safety, one officer fired shots. Because of the gunfire, three cars were also reportedly involved in a crash. Officers also saw cars near the initial scene firing shots.

Due to continuous gunfire and an active scene, a call was issued for a citywide assist, and law enforcement officers from multiple surrounding agencies responded.

One person claimed he was shot by police and was treated for minor injuries. Six other people were treated at the hospital for gunshot wounds–one of them is in critical condition; the other victims have non life-threatening injuries.

The shootings spanned from 70th Street to 72nd Street and from Prospect Avenue to Brooklyn Avenue. Police say they have suspects in custody who are being questioned about the incident.
