Man close to woman charged with Columbia murder speaks out

A man who claims to be the ex-boyfriend of Monique Parra, the woman accused of the fatal shooting of 45-year-old Kevin Hollins, spoke to ABC 17 News Friday.

Curtis Hayes said he and Parra have a son together and have remained in close contact although they are no longer in a relationship.

“I instantly threw up just hoping it wasn’t her and it was him.,” he said. “It’s a sad situation because me and my son are the innocent ones.”

Police found Hollins, Parra’s current boyfriend, dead inside a home on Kathy Drive on Nov. 20.

According to the probable cause statement, Parra told police she and Hollins were arguing over the gun when it went off. She first told police she was the one who pulled the trigger. But she later said she wasn’t sure if her hand had been on the gun when it was fired.

Hayes claims Hollins was abusive and controlling. He believes Parra acted in self-defense.

Columbia Police Department dispatch records show officers had been called to Hollins’ home three times since Oct. 19 for disturbances. But according to online court records, Hollins had no criminal charges.
