Fulton man charged in attempted purse robbery
A Fulton man has been charged in Callaway County after police say he tried to steal a woman’s purse.
On Monday, Joseph Michael Wilson, 28, was charged with second-degree attempted robbery, second-degree domestic assault as a prior offender, and second degree property damage.
Fulton police said they took a domestic assault report from Wilson’s estranged wife on Sunday at the Police Department. A probable cause statement did not identify Wilson’s wife by name.
She told police officers her and Wilson were speaking at home in the 600 block of Bluff Street when Wilson attempted to steal her designer purse about 3 p.m. on Saturday.
Wilson is accused of ripping one of the purse’s handles and dragging the victim on the ground 10-15 feet. The victim was able to hold onto the handbag.
The woman showed a Fulton police officer scratches, a bruise and broken finger nail that she said were a result of the incident.
Later that same night, Wilson agreed to bring the victim’s items back to her parents’ home in the 700 block of Grand Avenue.
When Wilson arrived, he reportedly threw the woman’s clothes, makeup and other belongings out of his truck into the street. Wilson then used his truck to run over the items with the truck.
A police officer went to the location on Grand and found makeup bottles and other items that were consistent with the incident. The officer also found brown dried liquid on the back of Wilson’s truck at the home on Bluff Street. It matched dried liquid found on Grand Avenue.
According to Case.net, Wilson has three prior convictions for third-degree assault in Callaway County. Wilson was out on bail for robbery, second-degree assault, and tampering with a victim alleged in March.
A bail appearance hearing for Wilson is scheduled at the Callaway County Courthouse on Dec. 9 at 10 a.m.
