Columbia man charged after motorcycle chase

A Columbia man is charged with leading Boone County deputies on a motorcycle chase on Nov. 18.

On Monday, Boone County Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Spencer Bartlett charged Joshua Merle Meggers, 38, with felony resisting arrest and felony drug possession.

A probable cause statement reveals deputies saw Meggers driving a black motorcycle when he failed twice to use his turn signal.

When a deputy tried to stop Meggers on Southampton Drive near the Bethel Street intersection, he allegedly sped up and continued westbound on Southampton.

According to deputies, the chase reached speeds of more than 70 miles per hour.

Meggers lost control of the motorcycle near the intersection of Southampton Drive and Sinclair Road, before he ran into some nearby woods.

After a short foot chase, Meggers was taken into custody by deputies.

Deputies said that Meggers admitted to them he ran because he had methamphetamine, several syringes and a glass smoking pipe inside of a backpack.

Inside of the backpack, deputies recovered two baggies that field tested positive for methamphetamine.

Meggers remains in the Boone County Jail on a $10,000 cash-only bond.

A case review is scheduled for Meggers in Boone County on Wednesday, Nov. 30 at 1:30 p.m.
