October 2016, 10th warmest October on record

In a continuing trend, October was one of the warmest October’s on record. Last month closed in at nearly 7 degrees above the average temperature for the month, with an average high of 62.7. It was the 10th warmest October on record, a far cry from the 68.8 degrees set back in 1963.

A lot of the warmth this month can be attributed to a stubborn ridge to our south preventing typical fall weather from penetrating into Mid-Missouri. As that ridge continued to strengthen it brought not only one of the warmest summers on record to the South, but that trend continued into October for them as well.

Here in Mid-Missouri, while we did see one of the warmest Octobers on record, we only saw a few record breaking highs. Here’s the statistics from last month.

2 record high temperatures were set back to back on October 16th and 17th.

Tied for 7th in the warmest days with minimum temperature above 60.

Tied for 5th for the least amount of days below 40 at only 2 times.

Here in Mid-Missouri, we’re starting the month of November off on a warm note, with record highs in jeopardy. However, long term models are hinting that by the middle of the month we’ll begin to transition into a more seasonable pattern.

On average we can also expect to see at least 1 inch of snow through the end of the month. Climatologically speaking, our greatest snowfalls don’t come until we head into next year.
