Attorney general files suit against Columbia costume store

Missouri Attorney general Chris Koster has filed lawsuits against Gotcha Costume Rental and Theatrical Supplies LLC in Columbia and Celebrate the Season in St. Louis for selling non-prescription cosmetic contact lenses, according to a news release.

Under state and federal law, contact lenses must be sold with a valid prescription. The U. S. Food and Drug Administration classifies all contact lenses, including cosmetic, as medical devices.

Both Gotcha Costume Rental and Celebrate the Season sold cosmetic contact lenses to undercover investigators from the Consumer Protection Division without prescriptions, Koster said. The stores were notified afterward, but continued to sell the contacts without prescriptions, he said.

ABC 17 News is looking into the side effects of non-prescription contact lenses and what penalties will be imposed on the costume stores.
