UPDATE: Victim identified in Callaway County farm explosion
The Callaway County Sheriff’s Office confirmed Friday night one person died after a farm-related emergency in the 1900 block of County Road 231.
Saturday, the agency identified Stephen Fink, 45, of Macon, as the person who was killed in the incident.
Multiple agencies including the sheriff’s office, Missouri State Highway Patrol, North Callaway Fire Protection District and Callaway County EMS were called to the scene around 6:45 p.m. for reports of an explosion.
Responding units found a semi truck among the rubble of a collapsed farm structure.
Investigators said Fink was driving the semi, which was delivering liquid based cattle feed. The feed product was being offloaded into another container when the explosion happened. Fink was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to the sheriff’s department, it’s still unclear what caused the explosion, but said criminal activity is not suspected.
A second person was life-flighted to University Hospital to be treated for injuries, but is expected to survive.
The State Fire Marshal, Fulton Fire Department and Columbia Fire Department assisted with the investigation.
Lt. Clay Chism with Callaway County Sheriff’s Department told ABC 17 News the Occupational Safety and Health administration has been in contact with county investigators.
ABC 17 News reached out to the St. Louis area OSHA director who says the administration will not investigate any further because the truck driver was the owner of the company, and that wouldn’t require an investigation.
An autopsy was conducted Monday, results will take four to six weeks to complete.
