Body cameras now in use by Cole County deputies, LU Police

Deputies in Cole County and Lincoln University police officers are now equipped with body cameras that are to be used during any official exchange with citizens.

Both agencies say the new devices will increase safety and accountability of officers and the public.

“Even if we don’t release the information on a vehicle stop because it’s an ongoing investigation, if someone comes in and says your deputy acted inappropriately, I can look at it and make sure our people are doing what they’re supposed to do,” said Captain John Wheeler, the unopposed candidate for Cole County sheriff.

Deputy Hunter Bemboom has worked for Cole County for almost a year and says the camera is a welcome new tool.

“I’ve got a camera that’s turned on. The light comes on, people can see that pretty clear,” Bemboom said. “I do think that it is a sense of added security for us.”

The Cole County Sheriff’s Department now has 45 active cameras on the streets and the university police department has four.
