UPDATE: At least one person in custody for Moberly murder
UPDATE: KMIZ has learned through online court records that at least one person is in custody and has been charged with the murder of 39-year-old Kevin McCuiston.
28-year-old Joseph Lee Kertz of Moberly has been charged with first degree murder, first degree robbery, armed criminal action, second degree arson, unlawful possession of a weapon, tampering with evidence in a felony prosecution, and third degree promoting prostitution.
Other charges and arrests in the case may still be pending. Authorities say McCuiston was recently believed to be staying in the Boonville area, but DOR records indicate he was a long time resident in Hallsville.
UPDATE: 5:15 p.m.: The victim has been identified by an official as Kevin McCuiston, 39, of Hallsville. The autopsy is scheduled for Monday by the Boone County medical examiner.
The Interim Chief for Moberly Police told ABC 17 News that the house was supposed to be empty, and authorities have issued several warrants at several locations.
UPDATE: 4:05 p.m.: Interim Chief for Moberly Police said the coroner has ruled this death a homicide.
Chief Troy Link said witnesses and persons of interest are being interviewed right now. There is no known motive at this time.
UPDATE 12:05 p.m.: According to officials with the city of Moberly, authorities found smoke coming from a residence on 1505 Calhoun Street after being called to a shooting at 7:02 a.m. Thursday morning.
Moberly Fire Department personnel went into the residence and extinguished a small fire, where they located a deceased white male who appeared to have sustained a gunshot wound.
The victim has not been positively identified.
Witnesses and persons of interest are being questioned at Moberly Police Department. We will update you as we learn more information.
ORIGINAL STORY: Moberly and Randolph County officials are currently on the scene investigating a suspicious death in Moberly.
Randolph County Coroner Gerald Luntsford confirmed that at least one person is dead inside a residence in the area of Calhoun and Highway 24.
The investigation by Moberly Police, Randolph County Sheriff’s Department, the Highway Patrol Division of Drug and Crime Control, and the Randolph County Coroner is continuing.
