Police step up enforcement for Lincoln University’s homecoming weekend

This week, homecoming celebrations are underway in Jefferson City for Lincoln University’s 150th Anniversary year.

The university is expecting higher attendance this year for homecoming events because of the anniversary, according to university spokesperson Misty Young.

The main events take place Saturday with the homecoming parade starting at 9:30 a.m. and football game against St. Joseph’s College at 2:00 p.m.

Lincoln University police officers will work extended shifts.

Jefferson City police will have extra officers working throughout the weekend, including those on traffic and foot patrol.

Sgt. Doug Ruediger said police will be on the lookout for several things.

“From a traffic perspective, obviously erratic driving, impaired driving things like that,” Ruediger said. “There’s always the public consumption and open container violations, you know, just those violations that could tend to get people hurt.”

Drivers can expect temporary road closures Saturday morning for the homecoming parade starting downtown on High Street and on to Lafayette.

Ruediger said drivers should expect minor delays around the LU campus with the extra crowds.

“If you’re driving through the area during the homecoming festivities, just know that there’s going to be additional pedestrian traffic and additional vehicles, people from out of town that may not be familiar with the area,” Ruediger said. “So just be patient when you’re trying to get to where you’re going.”
