Shooting suspects appear in Boone County Court

Rod Jones and Marlin Johnson made their first appearances Monday afternoon in Boone County Court in connection with a shooting that happened early Saturday morning.

According to court documents, officers responded to multiple calls about gun shots on Claudell Lane. They saw Jones next to a car that matched a description given by a witness.

Police said Jones had a gun tucked into the back waistband of his pants. Court records show that Jones has previous felony convictions.

After police detained Jones in handcuffs for the shooting investigation, police said he ran from the scene.

ABC 17 News crews saw about 10 officers with K-9s in the area searching for Jones. He was found a short time later near Ash Street and Stadium Boulevard, still wearing the handcuffs.

Court documents say Jones fired a gun in city limits, 30 feet from a playground.

ABC 17 News spoke with residents at Columbia Square Apartments where the shooting was reported and where Jones has a listed address. Residents said it was the first such incident they an recall happening “inside the square.” They said most of the residents are single mothers with young children.

“The only thing that should be loud is kids outside yelling and playing around,” said one resident.

Johnson was also arrested early Saturday morning in connection with the shooting.

According to court documents, Johnson was sitting in the passenger seat of Jones’ car and was believed to be involved in the shooting.

Police said Johnson refused to follow orders and resisted arrest. They said he repeatedly pulled away from officers in attempts to keep from being handcuffed.

Court documents say Johnson repeatedly refused to identity himself to officers and had to be identified through fingerprints. They also say he was uncooperative throughout booking and combative with officers.

Court documents show that Johnson has previous convictions for burglary and property damage and is on probation for burglary.

According to case.net, Johnson is being held on a $5,000 bond and is ordered to have no contact with Jones. Jones is being held on a $50,000 bond.
