Downtown Columbia Walmart location to close Friday

Walmart has announced a decision to close a downtown Columbia location.

The retail giant announced the decision in a statement Monday morning.

The statement said, “After a rigorous review and consideration of various factors, we have made the decision not to renew the lease of the Walmart on Campus.”

The company says the location at 308 South Ninth Street on University of Missouri campus will close at 7:00pm Friday, October 7th.

Walmart said in a statement, “We are grateful to the customers who have given us the privilege of serving them for the last two years at this store.”

It also said “Our caring pharmacy staff will work with customers to transfer prescriptions to another convenient location. We will also be working with our eleven store associates to identify suitable transfer opportunities to other area Walmart stores and Sam’s Club.”

Walmart has three other locations in Columbia and one Sam’s Club location.

It’s unclear what factors were considered in the decision.
