Two in custody after shooting in central Columbia

UPDATE 9:30 A.M.: Columbia police say the two suspects taken into custody in connection to Saturday morning’s shooting are Rod Jamal Jones, 33, and Marlin Cortez Johnson, 20.

According to the Columbia Police Department, officers arrived on scene and located the suspect vehicle in Columbia Square Apartments. The driver, Jones, had a handgun in his waistband. CPD says Jones ran from the area. He was taken into custody without incident near Stadium Boulevard and Ash Street.

Johnson was the passenger in the vehicle. Police say he got out of the car and officers order him to the ground. Police say he tried to to resist and pull away from officers when they were attempting to arrest him. He was taken into custody.

Police say the shell casings they found on scene matched live rounds in the suspect vehicle.

Jones could face charges for weapons possessions, resisting arrest, and stealing.

Cortez could face charges for resisting arrest.

Both were transported and released to the Boone County Jail.

ORIGINAL STORY: Columbia police have confirmed to ABC 17 News two suspects are in custody for a shooting that happened early Saturday morning.

The call came in just before 5:00 a.m. about a shooting on Claudell Lane.

Police confirm shell casings were found however they do not have a possible target or motive.

They found a vehicle that matched a description they were given and say one of the suspects ran from the area.

Officers and K-9s were called to the area to search for the suspects. As one officer was searching in the area of Ash and Stadium, he saw who he believed to be one of the suspects crossing Stadium Boulevard. The officer said the suspect was taken into custody without incident.

A short while later, the second suspect was also taken into custody.
