Hurricane Matthew Sunday Updates

Hurricane Matthew is expected to significantly impact the Caribbean within the next 48 hours with life-threatening rainfall and hurricane force winds upwards to 140 mph. Matthew has been slow to move this weekend, only moving northwest at around 5 mph. It has weakened to a Category 4 hurricane from it’s maximum intensity of a Category 5 storm, which made it the strongest Atlantic hurricane since Felix nearly 10 years ago.

It is still a very dangerous and powerful storm as hurricane warnings have been issued for Jamaica, Haiti, and Cuba as they are in the path of the storm as it moves northward the next few days. Portions of Haiti could see upwards to 15-25″ of rainfall with locally heavier amounts closer to 40″ when Matthew moves through on Monday and Tuesday. This will certainly be a life-threatening event for those who live there and our thoughts go out to them.

Matthew is expected to continue to move northward over the next week and weaken as it moves into unfavorable weather conditions. Although current forecasts have the track staying east and offshore of Florida, it is simply too early to rule out impacts there the end of this work week. It is also too early to determine impacts, if any, will occur along the east coast Matthew will pose past next weekend. We will continue to monitor Matthew in the coming days and keep you informed of any changes to the current track.
