UPDATE: Highway 63 southbound opened after deadly crash, victim identified

UPDATE: 10:30 a.m.: Highway 63 southbound is now open. The accident has been cleared, and the victim has been identified.

The victim of the crash was 62-year-old Ronald Bowne. The cause of death is still unconfirmed.

UPDATE 7:30 am: Boone County Fire tweeted saying one person died in the crash on Highway 63 southbound near Breedlove Drive.

Our ABC 17 News crews on scene say a box truck was merging onto the highway when a vehicle smashed into the back of it.

Our crews say traffic is backed up, but is moving.

Boone County officials tell our crews the cause of death of the driver is unknown right now, but say the driver did make contact with the steering wheel.

MoDOT estimates the road will remain closed until 10:00am.

UPDATE 7:11 am: MoDOT confirms all southbound lanes are blocked near Breedlove Drive in north Boone County.

ORIGINAL: Several emergency units responded to reports of a crash on southbound Highway 63 Tuesday morning.

It happened around 6:30 am in the 17000 Block of Highway 63.

Public dispatch records show at least nine units are on the scene right now.

We’re hearing reports that the crash involved a semi and a box truck and that one person is pinned.

Reports indicated that a staff for life helicopter was sent to the crash and that crews are shutting down the highway.

Scanner traffic indicates that crews are rerouting traffic onto Old Highway 63 South. ABC 17 News is working to confirm this.
