Columbia residents react differently to three weekend shootings

For residents on Sylvan Lane, it seems like shootings are typical these days.

“There’s been, I guarantee, six shootings,” said Deborah Jackson, a resident on Sylvan Lane.

The victim of the area’s latest shooting was found close to her front porch.

“It’s dangerous for me. I’m afraid I’m going to die over here,” she said.

But residents in two other neighborhoods that experienced weekend shootings, one that sent a man to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, tell a different story.

“We don’t need to all of a sudden have a police officer stationed over here for one incident,” said a resident who lives near Arlene Drive.

On Friday night, a gunman shot at a car driving down Gillespie Bridge Road in south Columbia. No one was hurt.

Many people told ABC17 News Sunday they had just moved into the Gillespie Bridge Road area this past summer. But while they admit it was shocking that it happened, they still feel safe.

“They might not have even been from this neighborhood,” one resident said.

Residents on Isherwood Drive had similar experiences. Several were unaware a shooting had happened and admitted it was usually quiet and Columbia police patrolled sometimes but not because they had frequent crime.

Police dispatch records indicate there haven’t been any calls to Arlene Drive or Gillespie Bridge Road since January. Isherwood Drive has a few calls, but they are mostly 911 checks.
