Residents say students speed down street

According to residents on Pin Oak Boulevard, students from Battle High School speed down their street regularly.

Patrick Spencer says he’s lived on the street for almost 20 years. He told ABC 17 News that within in the last three years, when the high school opened, he’s seen drivers speeding and racing down the normally quiet street.

“I’m just trying to get them to slow down,” Spencer said. “It is 25 miles an hour.”

Another neighbor, David White, told ABC 17 he’s concerned about his granddaughter that lives next door. He says he’s seen teenagers not paying attention to their speed or surroundings.

“You know, four people in [the car], she’s on her phone, the music is loud,” White said. “It doesn’t take much.”

According to the Boone County Sheriff’s Department, they have received speeding complaints from the residents.

A sergeant with BCSD told ABC 17 that they have done speed enforcement but it is just not that productive. The sergeant said, unfortunately, they don’t write enough tickets to warrant more of a presence.

“We have to weigh out the complaints and the traffic issues around the county,” Sergeant Brian Leer said. “So sometimes it is just not productive to put people there repeatedly for 45 minutes at a time.”

The department has placed a radar trailer on the street in the past. The trailer records data about every car that drives by. When the trailer is ready to be moved, the deputies can download the information and create a report on the area.

Sergeant Leer also said that it’s not just this street and this neighborhood. He said many neighborhoods that have streets that connect two relatively popular roads see drivers using the residential streets to cut through.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, since January 2013, there have been zero crashes on Pin Oak Boulevard.
